...The dream of creation is the central idea in the halakhic consciousness -- the idea of the importance of [hu]man as a partner of the Almighty in the act of creation, [hu]man as creator of worlds. This longing for creation and the renewal of the cosmos is embodied in all of Judaism's goals.
--from The Halachic Man by Rabbi Soloveitchik
As a painter, I am seduced by the idea of beginnings and the power of creating. As a woman, I am intrigued by relationships that are the driving forces in our lives. For me, the two stories of Adam and Eve in the Bible, as explained by the Midrash, define the cycle of relationships — chance, connection, loss and hope —where anything can happen. But I do not feel constricted by the traditional explanations. Creation did not end on the sixth day; the human quest for love, forbidden temptations and even break-ups influence and shape the world in an ongoing act of creation in partnership with God.
The characters in my paintings are derived from the Midrash and pulled from my life.
