Gouache is an opaque watercolor similar to tempera paint. It is used a great deal in Indian Mogul painting and in Medieval art- two styles of art that greatly influence me. Traditionally, the stories told with gouache are unusual, mythological, and magical.
For me, gouache is special because of its light. In oil paint, the light bounces directly off the paint, but in gouache, the light moves through the paint and bounces back off the paper creating a very rich, velvety, flat color.
